Some ideas you can write about are your educational background, hobbies, past work experience in such fields as technical, website marketing and optimization, marketing, copywriting, etc. If you are just starting, you can start by writing a blog of your own or by contributing to others’ blog.

Here are the steps to start making money as a freelance article writer:

1. Equipment and software

You will need to have your own computer, a reliable Internet connection, and adequate time for writing. Most clients will request that you submit your work as a Microsoft Word document. Some clients will want to be able to reach you by phone.

As you get assignments, you will need at least 4-5 hours per day to meet the deadlines, and to attract more clients. However, the time you spend to accomplish a task will depend on your level of expertise on the subject and how organized you are.

2. Samples of your articles

Almost all clients will request to see samples of your writing before they decide to hire you. So you need some samples before you can begin marketing yourself.

You need to figure out which market you want to approach first, and then try to write at least five sample articles on the topic of your choice.

You also need to upload your articles on your blog, or your website, or on article directories in order to add credibility and to prove you have published articles. When requested by clients, you will have to send them links to your published samples that shows your name as the author to remove any doubt of your authorship.

If you want to try blogging, first study some successful blogs, and then write a few posts of your own to use as samples.

Whether you will win these projects will depend on your bid price, your experience in handing previous jobs successfully, and your skills shown in your samples.
